Who We Are

We are a diverse and welcoming community of people who love God and love one another. We believe in welcoming all people to be a part of us, whether you join us once or you make your home among us permanently, or if you wander away and come back after some time. We are always glad to welcome you!

Emmanuel was started by a devoted group of people with strong ties to Finland in the 1950's, and we still honor that heritage and beginning. Our distinctive architecture reflects traditional Northern European architecture of that time period. Today, however, we celebrate that as the City of Southfield has grown and become more diverse, so has our congregation. We are proudly one of the most culturally diverse congregations in the Southeast Michigan Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). We believe and fiercely protect the notion that people of every cultural background and skin color and age and gender expression and level of education and employment status are more than welcome here.
